We all know that AAC devices get used all day, every day.  So, just like we need to look after ourselves, your device needs regular “tlc” too!

Here are our top tips for keeping your device in tip top condition.

  1. Clean Your Device Regularly

A build-up of general dirt and dust can affect your device.  Add in food and liquids (which we know can’t always be helped!) and you could end up with non-functioning equipment.  Regularly clean down your device with antibacterial wipes.  Remember to remove frames, keyguards and touchguides when cleaning, and these can all be cleaned with a little soap and water.  Sometimes an unresponsive screen can be the result of a little bit of dirt stuck on the underneath of the keyguard or touchguide.

  1. Keep it Charged!

No one likes it when their device stops working; it’s frustrating for everyone.  By following good charging practices, you can be sure that your device will keep you chatting throughout the day.  Power off/shut down your device every night when you have finished using it.  Plug your charger in (ensure you are using the original charger provided with your device) and leave it to charge overnight for a good 8-10 hours.  This ensures that the device (and amp) is fully charged to use the next morning.  Another tip for good battery life is to make sure the brightness is set to around 75%, and screen is not permanently active.

  1. Back Up Your Vocabulary

If you are regularly editing your vocabulary then take backups every time.  This ensures that any changes you make aren’t lost if anything happens to your device, and if you “break” the vocabulary whilst editing you can always revert to the previous good one.  We have guides and videos on our website and YouTube channel that will show you the various ways to back up your vocabulary.

  1. Protect Your Screen!

Screen protectors are a cheap and invaluable way of protecting the touchscreen.  All new devices come with a screen protector already fitted.  If you notice that yours is damaged or no longer fitting correctly, contact Customer Support for a replacement or advice on which one to purchase.  If your device is still in warranty, we can replace these free of charge.

  1. Update, Update, Update

Just like a mobile phone, your AAC device requires regular updates.  Once every couple of months, connect your device to the internet and run software updates.  This will ensure that your device has the latest features and bug fixes so that your voice doesn’t get lost in the crowd!  If you need assistance with this, just call our Customer Support team and they can guide you through it.

  1. Storage

If you’re a budding photographer, or you like to play games, your device can quickly fill up with all this extra stuff.  Regularly delete anything you don’t use and move any photos or documents to an external drive (such as a USB stick).  By freeing up storage space, your device will continue to receive the updates it needs to keep it fresh.
